HENDERSONVILLE — The Hendersonville girls basketball team overcame the absence of its leading scorer to beat Gallatin 52-31 Thursday in a District 9-AAA game.

Here are five takeaways from the game.

Second-half run

The Lady Commandos were down 20-17 at halftime, but held Gallatin to only eight second-half points before the Lady Wave finished the game with a 3-pointer.

The key run was in the last part of the third quarter, when Hendersonville scored the last 12 points, turning a deficit into a 35-24 lead.

“We got off to a slow start and we have a tendency to do that,” Hendersonville coach Drew Johnson said. “Sometimes, it takes us 16 minutes to get going, but we really challenged our girls at halftime.”

Born to run

Janaya Mayes had three baskets in that 12-0 run for Hendersonville, which was marked by the Lady Commandos getting baskets in transition.

“We can be really good the more we do that,” Johnson said. “It‘s funny how teenage girls don‘t see the correlation, but that‘s when we‘re at our best. When we‘re running up and down the court, sharing the basketball, assists leading to layups, and I think they started to pick up on that.

Long out

Johnson said the Commandos could be without leading scorer Brooke Long for a while as Long tries to heal a bad back. Mayes led Hendersonville with 15 points, with three teammates also scoring in double figures.

“We‘re going to have to learn to play without our leading scorer, and maybe that had something to do with the slow start,” he said. “What coach wouldn‘t love to see four or five players in double figures?”

Maintaining focus

Gallatin got seven points apiece for Jo‘Neca Talley and Jeremia Montgomery, but the Lady Wave couldn‘t recover after Hendersonville took the lead.

“I thought we lost our focus, and once we lost our focus and once the wheels fell off, we reverted back to some bad things we were doing earlier in the year,” Gallatin coach Jerry Landers said. “That‘s part of the growing process, but we‘ve got to get out of that cycle and get out of it soon.”

The district race

Hendersonville, which won 13 games last year, raised this year‘s mark to 13-6, 4-2 in the district. The Lady Commandos trail only Beech and Lebanon in the district standings.

Gallatin fell to 8-9, 0-6.
